The domain activities of the department also comprise of documentation of practices, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacovigilance, laboratory validation of apparently safe/ useful practices and clinical evaluation of the different Ethnomedicines and natural Products.

Biodiversity Conservation Department (BCD)

This department seeks to foster the conservation and sustainable use of biological resources in the country. This goal is pursued through conducting multifaceted research on the indigenous medicinal and food plants of Uganda. This department is also responsible for the development of optimized technologies for domestication and cultivation of identified indigenous plants for medicine and food as a means to conserve them thus ensuring their sustainability and the continuous supply of good quality plant material. This is achieved through plant propagation using conventional methods and plant biotechnology. The main focus areas include phytogeography, conservation ecology, ethnobotany, population biology and systematics.

Traditional Medicines Development and Drug Discovery Department (TMDD)

The aim of the department in the Institute is to determine the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of drugs, drug substances or potential drug substances of natural origin as well as the search for new drugs from natural sources. The department also deals with qualitative and quantitative analysis of plant secondary metabolites with a view of establishing chemical structures of biologically active compounds. These processes generate information that leads to the development of pharmaceutical products from plants and traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases. The department also conducts research on indigenous medical systems to establish knowledge on their scientific validation. The knowledge generated here is used for product development, value addition and advocacy for the adoption of safe and efficacious traditional medicine products and systems into the national health care system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Your Mission ?

Our Mission Is To promote traditional medical knowledge and practices for improved health through mutual cooperation amongst health systems.

What is The Reason For Establishment ?

ICIPE woodlot was established after a joint research project with ICIPE in 2010. The project was looking at means to improve and standardize the factory by supplying traditional healers with raw materials. The Forest School also needed a woodlot with trees and plants which could be used for demonstration purposes. There were collected samples of raw materials of different trees used for production of medicine by traditional healers and sent to the laboratory of ICIPE to research them. The samples were tested for the efficacy, safety, and toxicity of the trees. The trees which were recognized as non-toxic and safe to be used to treat the patients were planted in the woodlot. The size of the woodlot is 0.25 acres. Currently, it is used for the practical trainings of the Forest School.
